B.S. (Hons), Mechanical Engineering, University of California Berkeley, December 2004.

Current research is in design optimization and development of a metallic nanoconcentrator electrode for a lateral multijunction photovoltaic cell. Other research interest lies in optimization of the power grid through dynamic demand response in order to deal with the intermittency of renewable energy sources and hence make them a serious contender against fossil fuels, and also to seriously reduce the number of peaking power plants and spinning reserves we would need to sustain the human population. The aim of bi-way communication at the demand level is to additionally give grassroots efforts an increased role in realizing a healthier and more equitable planet.

Ramesh Rao

Having been educated in one of 3 oldest schools in England, Ramesh graduated in physics from Imperial College, London - Royal College of Science which was merely ~150 years old. Further studies in physics resulted in specialization into Relaxation, the Magnetic Resonance type! This ensured that his BS could be supported with MS, his 'Tale from Canterbury', and became a definitive PhD, thanks to 'William of Ockham' and his razor.

After several years of playing with technology in diverse areas such as radars, smart cards, parallel and distributed processing, ATM networking, image processing, etc and a variety of companies ranging from IBM, ATT Bell Labs and others, he decided that the allure of climbing rock in California could not be resisted further -- particularly if he could put his relaxation expertise into practice. This brought him back to the Pacific shores and also gave the opportunity to shape undergraduate minds at university level in San Francisco -- additionally a magnetic personality and resonating with the market was also put into practice as a telecom market analyst in the areas of the big iron switches and routers. Here he perfected the science and art of balancing market opportunity/dynamics and technology which was much appreciated by all concerned. After evolving and testing this approach further in the field, he became convinced that this version of Ockhams razor is quite effective.

Lately, having seen the light at the end of the quantum tunnel, he has been primarily focused in areas related to energy sources and its channeling and the power within. He hopes to finally reach a state of enlightenment in this field -- so that he can write the definitive treatise on "Zen and the art of Energy". SmartGrid is just a feature in this path which will be treated in the "108 Silicon Valley Tales" variety. As yet to be decided is whether these will be written in C, C++, English, Hindi, Mandarin or other -- perhaps all of the above.
