Andrew Tang: Senior Director, Smart Energy Web, Pacific Gas and Electric Company
Andrew Tang joined Pacific Gas & Electric Company in 2007 as Senior Director, Smart Energy Web. Andrew has responsibility for developing and implementing PG&E’s active demand-side management programs. These include: PG&E’s Demand Response Programs, which encompass over 800MW of Peak demand; the Clean Air Transportation Group, which is evaluating opportunities for the electrification of the transportation sector; and the Energy Information Network, which is the communications network enabling in-premise displays and distributed load management.
From 2005 to 2007, Mr. Tang was the Director of European WiMAX Solutions Development for Intel Corporation. In that role, he managed a Europe-based team responsible for working with wireless carriers and ISPs to implement next-generation wireless data networks and advised Intel Capital on several investments in European start-up telecommunications companies.
Mr. Tang spent the first 15 years of his career as an investment banker with Montgomery Securities, NationsBanc, JP Morgan and Greenbridge Partners. Over that time, Mr. Tang helped raised over $10 billion in growth capital and advised on over $2 billion of mergers and acquisitions in the technology, media, and telecommunications sectors. Representative clients included; Airgate PCS, Centennial Cellular, Charter Communications, Cumulus Media, Metricom Triton PCS, Telecorp, and Vulcan Ventures.
Mr. Tang graduated from Wesleyan University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Mathematics and Economics.
Moderator - Kenneth Jaffe: Partner, Alston+Bird LLP
Ken Jaffe is a partner in the firm's Energy Group. He focuses his practice on regulatory matters affecting participants in restructured competitive energy markets. He has extensive experience in utility mergers and asset transactions, the development and operations of regional transmission system operators and regulatory litigation. Ken represents one of the largest regional independent system operators, as well as major transmitting utilities and market participants, in a variety of matters before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.
Ken has been featured as one of the leading energy lawyers in Washington in Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers for Business and The Best Lawyers in America. He is a member of the Energy Bar Association and he speaks regularly at the EBA’s meetings and seminars.
Ken has also represented electricity market participants in the development, negotiation and pursuit of approvals from state and federal agencies for the restructuring of electric utilities. Those transactions have included mergers and acquisitions, generation divestitures and purchases, contract and tariff restructuring, the recovery of stranded costs and the development of post-restructuring arrangements for transmission and power marketing and procurement.
Andrew Campbell: Senior Energy Advisor, CPUC
Mr. Campbell was a member of the Commission's Division of Strategic Planning prior to joining Commissioner Chong's staff. Previously, he worked for three years as an investment banker in Salomon Smith Barney's Global Energy group in New York, where he advised energy companies in mergers, acquisitions and corporate finance. Prior to that, Mr. Campbell worked for ExxonMobil for two and a half years in Houston as a reservoir engineer overseeing several oil and gas fields. Mr. Campbell also served as a graduate intern on the U.S. Senate's Energy and Natural Resources Committee. Mr. Campbell holds a Masters degree in Public Policy from the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, and a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering and a B.A. degree in Economics from Rice University.
Jordan Breslow: General Counsel, Silver Spring Networks
Jordan Breslow is the Vice President and General Counsel of Silver Spring Networks, a leading smart grid networking provider to the energy industry. Silver Spring’s customers include market leaders PG&E and Florida Power & Light, and its investors include Foundation Capital, Kleiner Perkins and Google.
Prior to joining Silver Spring in 2008, Jordan worked for eight years with Marc Andreesen at Opsware, where he served in several roles including Vice President and General Counsel. Mr. Breslow advised Opsware through numerous transactions including the ultimate sale of Opsware to Hewlett-Packard for $1.65 billion in 2007. Prior to joining Opsware, Jordan served as Co-Chair of the Intellectual Property Practice Group at Foster Pepper & Shefelman and as General Counsel for Geoworks.
Mr. Breslow graduated summa cum laude with a B.A. from San Francisco State University and a J.D. from Hastings College of the Law at the University of California, San Francisco. Jordan reduces his household footprint through extensive recycling and energy-efficient appliances. He used to drive a Prius too -- until his fourth son learned to drive last year and permanently borrowed the keys.
Steve Berberich: VP Corporate Services, ISO
Steve Berberich is the Vice President of Technology and Corporate Services and Chief Financial Officer for the California Independent System Operator Corporation. He joined the company in November 2005. Mr. Berberich shapes the corporation’s technology strategy and oversees the areas of information technology; accounting and finance; procurement and vendor management; the program office; and facilities.
Mr. Berberich brings to the company more than 20 years of technology and financial experience. He has extensive experience in consulting, financial services and utilities having held positions with Andersen Consulting (now Accenture), in banking and in various management positions with Dallas-based TXU, including Vice President of Information Technology, where he was heavily involved with implementing the deregulated electricity market in Texas.
Mr. Berberich holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Finance and a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Tulsa.
Mike Gravely: Research Manager - Energy Systems, California Energy Commission
Mike Gravely is the Manager of the Energy Systems Research Office at the California Energy Commission. His office manages over $250 million in active energy related research and development projects. The office supports research for California in a variety of technical areas that include: Smart Grid, Renewable Grid Integration, Transmission, Distribution, Demand Response, Energy Storage, Distributed Energy Resources, Carbon Capture and Sequestration (CCS), and Sustainable Communities. His office is completing several research activities focused on understanding and defining what California needs in a future Smart Grid. Mike has over 30 years of engineering and integration experience in the energy, aerospace and communications fields. Mike Gravely has a BSEE from the Virginia Military Institute and an MSEE from California State University at Sacramento.
Moderator - Gregory Heibel: Partner - Orrick, Herrington, and Sutcliffe, LLP
Greg Heibel, a partner in the Silicon Valley office, is a member of the Emerging Companies Group, which advises emerging and public technology companies, venture capital firms and other technology investors, as well as Orrick's Energy Group.
Mr. Heibel’s practice includes the formation, financing and general corporate counseling of rapidly growing technology companies; the representation of venture capital firms and other investors in private and public offerings, as well as other complex transactions related to high growth companies.
Mr. Heibel has completed hundreds of financings, mergers, acquisitions and intellectual property transactions for clients in the networking, wireless, Internet, software, life sciences and consumer industries. Additionally, Mr. Heibel has represented numerous Nasdaq listed companies in their public offering, mergers and acquisitions and ongoing corporate governance needs, including Foundry Networks, Virage Networks, Adeza, Laserscope, Intellisync and Preview Systems.
Mr. Heibel also was an Assistant Investment Manager for Genevest, a venture capital firm based in Geneva, Switzerland, where he participated in the first organizational meeting of the European Union World Wide Web Consortium. In addition, Mr. Heibel has worked with a number of venture capital backed technology companies in operational and advisory roles, including Intellimeter, eT Communications and Metering Technology Corporation.
Mr. Heibel also has represented numerous venture capital firms in their investment activities, including Maveron, Menlo Ventures, Mohr Davidow Ventures, Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Bessemer Venture Partners, VantagePoint Venture Partners and Grey Capital.
Before joining Orrick, Mr. Heibel was an attorney with Venture Law Group.
David Meyers: Director of Business Development - Western Region, EnerNOC David Meyers leads EnerNOC’s sales and business development efforts to commercial and industrial customers in the Western region of the United States. David is responsible for market positioning, market penetration and overall revenue generation throughout the region.
Prior to joining EnerNOC, David was a management consultant to the transportation, energy and infrastructure sectors, managed a healthcare business, and led the development of an autonomous solar-powered boat. Earlier in his career, he was a Captain of offshore vessels, a Professor of Nautical Science, and a Naval Officer in the Israel Defense Forces. David holds Masters degrees in Management from Maine Maritime Academy and Computer Information Systems from Bentley College.

Alex Beavers: Corporate Director, Stanford Research Institute (SRI) International Alex Beavers is a 30-year veteran high-technology executive and entrepreneur. At SRI International he is responsible for the commercialization of advanced materials and clean technologies. He is also Chairman of the Board of Averatek Corporation, a startup manufacturing company based on an advanced copper deposition technology developed at SRI International.
Prior to this position, Alex was the founding CEO of Artificial Muscle, Inc., where he led the company for three years after it was spun out of SRI. Prior to founding Artificial Muscle, Alex was CEO of Thomson Industries, a global linear motion systems company based in New York. He has also been CEO of ITP Systems, a factory floor systems integration company, CEO of Applicon, Inc., one of the original CAD/CAM systems companies, CEO of Schlumberger Automation Systems Asia, and General Manager of the General Electric Vision Systems Business. In addition to these CEO positions, he was a Managing Partner in the Consulting Business at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP, where he led the Manufacturing and Supply Chain Management practices. He has also served on the Board of Directors of several high-tech startup companies.
Alex’s academic background includes a BSEE (Vanderbilt University), an MSEE and a PhDEE (University of Houston), and an MBA (Boston University).
Craig Lawrence: Accel Partners Craig joined Accel in 2008 to focus on investments in energy and cleantech, with particular interest in demand-side opportunities, including energy efficiency, demand management, smart grid, energy storage, and transportation. Craig is also interested in the impact of new energy technologies on consumers, and in companies that leverage the growing consumer awareness of energy and sustainability issues.
Craig brings to Accel over 15 years of experience in R&D, engineering, product development, and senior management. Prior to joining Accel, he spent 10 years at IDEO, one the world’s leading product development and innovation companies. Early in his career at IDEO, Craig led teams of designers, researchers and engineers developing products from concept through manufacturing across a range of industries, including consumer electronics, consumer products, medical devices, furniture, and toys. He developed successful products for market leading companies including Intel, Microsoft, Whirlpool, Hewlett Packard, Cisco, and Steelcase. He holds numerous patents, and his products have been recognized with international design awards. Most recently, Craig founded and led IDEO’s energy practice, which focuses on providing strategy, design, and engineering services to the energy industry. Notable clients of the practice included First Solar, British Petroleum, Rocky Mountain Institute, Ford, and the U.S. Department of Energy. Craig frequently speaks on design and innovation as it relates to the energy industry.
While on sabbatical from IDEO, Craig served as an EIR at Mohr Davidow Ventures, developing a business plan and technology strategy for a new automotive start-up. Prior to IDEO, Craig was an R&D engineer at Gyration, a start-up developing advanced sensor technologies for consumer electronics. He also spent several years at Engineering Dynamics, Inc., solving complex engineering problems for the petroleum, power, and water industries.
Craig holds a B.S in Mechanical Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin, and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University, where his research focused on Smart Materials. Funded by the Department of Energy, Craig explored how we might increase the intelligence, functionality, and efficiency of materials through the use of embedded sensors, actuators and computational power. Craig’s research led to several patents and publications in leading research journals.
Victor Westerlind
Victor joined RockPort Capital in the Menlo Park, California office. Previously, he spent eight years as a venture capitalist at InterWest Partners working on investments in semiconductor, advanced materials, Cleantech, wireless and enterprise hardware industries. Earlier, he worked in product marketing and product management roles at Applied Materials where he help bring semiconductor physical vapor deposition (PVD) equipment into the flat panel display industry. Before that, he worked as an engineer in a venture backed startup called Candescent Technologies developing a novel field emission flat panel display technology, gaining valuable experience commercializing new technologies. Victor started his career at Hughes Aircraft Company working on a number of engineering projects ranging from missile defense systems to satellite communications systems. He attended Stanford University on Hughes Fellowship where he focused on Micro Electro Mechanical Structures (MEMS). Victor holds an MBA from Harvard Business School, a MS in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University and a BS in Electrical Engineering from Cornell University.

Erfan Ibrahim: Technical Executive at the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI).
Erfan Ibrahim is a Technical Executive in the Intelligrid program area of the Power Delivery & Utilization Sector. He leads the research that focuses on the communications, systems management and cyber security infrastructure for the utility Smart Grid with particular emphasis on Home Area Networks (HAN), Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) and Internet based Wide Area Networking.
Before joining EPRI, Dr. Ibrahim founded and managed The Bit Bazaar LLC (TBB), a full service IT and business consulting firm, offering services to clients in the High Tech, Financial Services, and Energy sectors. At TBB Dr. Ibrahim focused on wireless communications, network management, and information security technologies with a particular emphasis on aligning the IT goals of his clients with their business goals for sustained competitive advantage.
Prior to establishing The Bit Bazaar LLC, Dr. Ibrahim’s career included the following positions: VP of Sales & Marketing at Jyra Research, Product Manager for Network Management at Pacific Bell Network Integration (now AT&T), Science and Math Lecturer at National University, Nuclear Fusion Research Engineer at UCLA and Plasma Physicist at Lawrence Livermore National Lab.

Nathan Ota: Solutions Product Marketing Manager for Consumer Solutions, Trilliant
Nathan Ota has overall responsibility for Trilliant’s consumer offerings in including, solutions roadmap, hardware and software capabilities, customer messaging, and availability. Nathan has 8 years experience with wireless sensor networks and residential energy management, and 4 years strategic marketing and consulting experience in the wireless sensor network and energy industries. He has hands on experience with all major wireless communication technologies including Zigbee, WiFi, 802.15.4, and 6LoWPAN. Nathan holds a PhD and MS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley where he focused on home energy control strategies using wireless sensor networks.
Hugh McDermott: Vice President Global Utilities & Energy, Better Place, Inc.
Mr. McDermott recently joined Better Place as the Vice President Global Utilities & Energy where he leads the smart-grid and utility eco-system initiatives. Mr. McDermott possesses over 25 years of experience in energy technology and energy infrastructure development spanning over 40 countries to-date. Mr. McDermott previously served as senior vice president and one of the founding principles of Nexant, an advisory and software solutions firm specializing in the energy sector and a recognized leader in developing transmission network software solutions. Mr. McDermott spent much of his 10 years with Nexant leading global strategic initiatives including heading numerous high-profile initiatives across Asia and more recently helping to position the firm as a leader in smart-grid solutions. Prior to joining Nexant, Mr. McDermott served three years as the chief advisor on private power investment to the Government of India. Mr. McDermott’s background includes successfully leading several energy-related startups ranging from power marketing to commercialization of advanced energy technologies. Rick Geiger has been with Cisco for 5 years, formerly as Director of Engineering in Cisco’s Physical Security Business Unit. Prior to joining Cisco, Mr. Geiger was VP Engineering for GE Security in Physical Security, video surveillance and access control. Rick has in depth experience in the global utility market with more than 10 years as VP Engineering and Chief Technical Officer for Itron. Presently Solutions Director for Utilities and Smart Grid, on Cisco’s Business Transformation Team, Rick and the Smart Grid Vertical Team serve the US and Canada Utility markets with Secure, Resilient and Scalable network solutions for smart grid, advanced metering, distribution automation and utility telemetry.
